Death Of A Rebel

leave a comment »

I’ve been reading the biography of Phil Ochs for the last couple of days. I had never really heard of the guy but his music is pretty powerful and was, apparently, pretty important to the political/folk movement during the 60’s. He and Bob Dylan were buddies in the early 60’s but Ochs never really attained the same level of success as Dylan and eventually hung himself in the mid-70’s. I just got the 3 disc complilation “Farewells and Fantasies” which is somewhat of a musical chronicle of his career and I really enjoy his urgently somber protest songs….I can’t believe it took me this long to find out about this guy…anyhoo, I recommend him if you like this kind of stuff.

New music, new job, new fucking haircut.

I went to every guitar store in Greenville yesterday looking for a job. I’ve been buying and selling guitars and amps for a while now and had a good deal of success. I knew when I got out of school I wanted to pursue a career that involved guitars and live music…well, I’ve taken the first step! I nearly got hired on the spot at 5th String Music, a small boutique acoustic instrument shop where the average price of an instrument is upwards of a grand….that’s good cause I’m gonna be paid hourly and on commission.  Anyhoo, they called me back and want me to come sit down with em one day this week. They also called 3 or 4 previous employers (all of whom gave me raving reviews….odd) and all seems to be going well. I can’t fucking wait to be around high end acoustic guitars all day long.

I also got some new albums yesterday. I got Cracker’s “Sunrise In The Land of Milk and Honey” which has Patterson Hood from DBT singing on one song….and I really like it. I’m gonna have to go back and dig up their previous 8 albums…All I’ve really heard from them is what has been on the radio (LOW). I also got the Coathangers new album, “Scramble”…..I can’t say enough good shit about them…all girl band from hotlanta and it’s the catchiest stuff I’ve heard in a while.

Continuing to BLOG…

I’m finished with my academic career for now (except for that one stat class…) but I’m gonna continue to post on here for lack of anything else constructive to do. I just moved back to Greenville and into my parent’s guest bedroom where i can be reminded daily that I am, in fact, a guest. I’m gonna start looking for a job this week if, for no other reason, than to make enough money to see a decent live music performance sometime in the near future…so for now this is what I feel like…..harris eating wings at cup

Final

I was in the lab tonight until 12:15 and I still have not sent my pdf for 564 off to the printer….so I got that goin for me. Anyhoo, here are some shots from my second shoot. I really focused more on audio interviews over the last week and I have a lot of shooting left to do but here is some of what I have. My goal is to portray what working for the student rec dept is like. There are tons of kids who do work them and they all seem to love their jobs. I don’t know how I never caught on to something like this but I should have, great opportunity.

Dance Dance Dance Dance Dance to the radio.

This is Ian Curtis from the band Joy Division. One of my favorite songs of all time (bold, I know…) is Transmission…I really like this picture of him. It’s kind of grainy and a bit dated but the direction his eyes are looking is really haunting and speaks volumes about what he was going through just before he died. This was my desktop background for too long and I finally changed it but I felt the need to share it.

Drive-By Truckers

This is Patterson Hood. He’s one of the guitarists/singers in the band The Drive-By Truckers….. they’ve really come to define southern rock in the 21st century and I can’t get enough…I took this picture in mid-january in athens, ga. at the 40 watt club. This was the second night of a 3 night show and it rocked. I’m going to Charleston tonight to see them at the music farm and hopefully I will get some good photos of the other people in the band. If you haven’t heard them yet I’d get on it….Southern Rock Opera might be the best rock n’ roll album of this century.

Trucker

I found this little terrier at a truck stop on the way to a Drive-By Truckers show in Athens, GA a couple of weeks ago. I tried to find him a new owner but it never worked out and now I’m kind of attached and I think I’ll just keep him. I took him down to the mighty Congaree this weekend and I was amazed at how sure-footed he is. The vet told me he was born some time around early November so he can’t be that old. I kept taking pictures of him in mid-air and this one was the best. His back feet are perfectly lined up and he’s really stretched to the max. I just wish my shadow wasn’t in the picture and you could see his face a bit better.

Cardinals beat the Panthers in the Playoffs…

leave a comment »

I have to start this post by saying I wish the Cardinals had won the Super Bowl. I was lucky enough to get tickets to 3 home Panthers games this year and 1 playoff game. I saw the Panthers beat the Cardinals the first time they played and then get destroyed by them in the playoffs at homedscn0057. It was terrible and I took this picture with my point and shoot outside the stadium post game.
